ISOLATE/CREATE - La Dispute - "Custom Fonts"

FROM THE ARTIST: We talk of mental blocks more than we do what feels harder to me: starting out.

If in following a path I encounter a wall, I know with some certainty the path continues beyond it, so I push through or I climb over and I forge forward. To wake though in a field with no visible paths and no even vague end point, how do you start walking? To where or to what do you walk?

I’ve felt frequently at that place in the last couple years—option paralyzed by limitless beginning points, scared of the future in fraught times—and searching for the impulse to step. Now, staring ahead at so much self-sequestered nothing, with so much time to fill, and with so much genuinely frightening uncertainty for so many people backlighting it all, I was struggling even more to find it. Until I realized what participation (yours and ours) in this project suggests.

That art is always an invitation to collaborate, and more than that, to belong to a community. And that even if you look ahead at the field and see nothing, there are people beside who see the same thing, but are likewise willing to take that step too despite everything.

So this is a twofold prompt for you and for us to start walking, even if the end is unclear (or there is no end yet), and even if you, like us, feel scared. There are stems to a song for you to remix how you please, but also custom fonts from previous albums to tinker with, and games that Adam made during our writing process to help spurn creativity through unconventional means.
