About this model

The Audio-Technica AT3525 is a wide-range fixed-charge condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern, part of the company's 30 Series and designed for professional use across project studio recording, high-quality sound reinforcement and broadcast. Released around 1998, it uses a permanently polarized back plate that has been aged for energy stabilisation and precision-milled for charge linearity, reducing both frequency response peaks and diaphragm break-up distortion, while the low-mass diaphragm improves transient response, extends bandwidth and lowers handling and mechanical noise transfer. The symmetrical housing around the capsule and its open acoustical environment give an off-axis response well suited to studio work where natural reproduction of off-axis sound matters. Frequency response runs from 30Hz to 20kHz with an impedance of 100 ohms, open circuit sensitivity of -48dB, a dynamic range of 124dB, a signal-to-noise ratio of 72dB and a maximum input level of 146dB SPL, requiring 48V phantom power at around 4mA. A -10dB pad raises maximum SPL handling to 156dB, and a second switch engages a high-pass filter rolling off at 80Hz at 12dB per octave. The microphone measures 119mm long by 48mm in diameter and weighs 231g, terminating in a 3-pin male XLR. Sound On Sound's 1998 review found it at its best with the source close enough for proximity effect to come into play, producing a rich, warm sound on vocals with plenty of presence and detail.
