About this listing
Throughout the history of rock music, few guitars have possessed such a distinctive identity and legendary status as David Gilmour’s Black Strat. More than just a Stratocaster, this guitar has become an integral part of Pink Floyd’s music and David Gilmour’s life. This original 1969 Fender Stratocaster was manufactured in 1969. During a U.S. tour, Gilmour purchased several Stratocasters from the legendary Manny’s Music in New York City to serve as backup instruments. One of them was later refinished in black and gradually became his primary recording and performance guitar—the instrument that would eventually become known to guitar enthusiasts worldwide as the “Black Strat.” Over the following decades, the Black Strat accompanied Gilmour throughout his extraordinary musical journey, helping him create countless iconic sounds. From Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here to The Wall, many of his most recognizable guitar tones can be traced back to this instrument. The atmospheric, deeply expressive melodies heard in legendary compositions such as “Comfortably Numb” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” are inseparable from the sound of the Black Strat. Throughout its long playing history, the Black Strat underwent numerous modifications and component replacements. Its pickups, pickguards, neck, and even its electronics were changed and adjusted multiple times. The different configurations used throughout various periods contributed to the distinctive tonal characteristics of each era. These modifications gradually gave the guitar its unique voice and appearance, becoming fascinating details that continue to captivate fans and collectors alike. In 2019, the original Black Strat sold at auction for nearly US$4 million. The sale set a record for the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, further cementing the instrument’s iconic status in music history. Given the Black Strat’s legendary place in guitar culture, Fender Custom Shop officially introduced the David Gilmour Signature Black Strat in 2008. It was one of Fender’s most ambitious projects to recreate an iconic instrument to an exceptionally high standard of authenticity and detail. The reproduction series was crafted by the Fender Custom Shop team using reference materials and measurements from Gilmour’s original guitar, faithfully recreating the Black Strat’s most representative configuration and visual details. Fender initially offered two versions: NOS (New Old Stock) and Relic. From its black alder body and maple neck and fingerboard to its electronics and pickup configuration, every detail was carefully considered. The guitar features Fender Custom Shop Fat ’50s single-coil pickups paired with a Seymour Duncan SSL-5 single-coil pickup, along with the distinctive Bridge Pickup Neck-On Switch. This small switch allows the neck pickup to be activated in any pickup-selector position, providing two additional pickup combinations beyond the standard five-way Stratocaster selection. These combinations can deliver a broader, fuller tonal character reminiscent of a Telecaster, making this switching configuration one of the lesser-known secrets behind many of Gilmour’s classic recordings. Following its release, the series quickly established itself as one of the most recognizable signature Stratocaster models on the collector market. Its appeal lies not only in David Gilmour’s immense influence on rock history, but also in the fact that the Black Strat itself has transcended its identity as a guitar to become an enduring symbol of Pink Floyd’s music and an entire era of rock. For fans and guitar collectors, the Black Strat is far more than a classic black Stratocaster. It represents a tangible piece of music history. Every time those familiar sustained notes and expansive soundscapes ring out, they evoke the imaginative, emotionally charged sonic world of Pink Floyd.Overall, the guitar is in approximately 90% condition, with minor signs of use. There are a few small finish dings along the edges of the body, as well as two cracks in the pickguard. The frets retain approximately 80% of their life. All accessories are as shown in the photos.
