Ibanez TS-9 Tube screamer from the early 1980's. This screamer has been around the block but sounds killer. Pedal was fully tested, pots cleaned and lubed, then fully tested and works like it should with no issues.
This pedal has the infamous JRC2043 chip, which either you love, or hate.
The 1981 Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer marks the very first year of production for the 9-series overdrive. Often referred to as "Black Label" models, these early units are highly sought after by collectors for their historical significance and specific internal components.
Key Specifications & Identification
- Production Year: 1981 (The first digit of the serial number on original units typically indicates the year, e.g., 1XXXXX for 1981).
- Back Label: Features a black label on the bottom plate with "Made in Japan". Later vintage models switched to a silver label.
- Chassis: Heavy, thick metal construction.
- Battery Cover: Should have "Maxon" embossed on the plastic cover.
- Internal Board: The circuit board is typically marked "MAXON" at the top.
Circuitry & ToneThe 1981 TS9 is almost identical to its predecessor, the TS808, but features a different output section that produces a slightly brighter, less "smooth" tone.
- Op-Amp Chips: Early 1981 units most commonly used the JRC4558D chip, which is considered the "holy grail" for its vocal midrange. Some very late 1981 batches began using the less desirable JRC2043DD chip.
- Resistors: Authentic vintage units often have distinctive green-coated resistors on the circuit board.
- Tone Character: Known for a signature "mid-hump" that helps a guitar cut through a band mix, making it ideal for blues and rock.
