Grommes G8L Precision Automatic Level Control

A dual-channel compressor/limiter from the late 1970s

Developed in the late 1970s by Grommes~Precision, it was intended to maintain consistent audio levels in professional sound applications like broadcasting or studio recording. The G8L provides two channels of compression/limiting with solid-state electronics, using integrated circuits (notably the NE570 compander chip introduced around 1977) instead of older vacuum tube technology.

As an automatic level control device, it can function as a compressor for smoothing overall volume or as a peak limiter to prevent overload, depending on the mode of operation.

This model is relatively rare today and is known for imparting a bit of late-1970s analog character to the audio (due in part to its LM1458 op-amp based design)

Features:

- Dual-channel (stereo) compressor/limiter. Each channel processes audio independently, with linkable operation for stereo use.

- Selectable compressor (AGC) mode vs. limiter mode. In compressor mode the unit automatically rides gain with a low fixed threshold (acting as an automatic leveler), while in limiter mode it only intervenes on peaks above a user-set threshold.

- Two analog VU meters (one for each channel) display output level.

- Connections: Balanced line-level input and output.
