Northwest Vintage Guitars presents a rare Alder bodies variant of the Gibson S-1 single cut SSS. This was Gibson's answer to the Stratocaster with 3 Single coil pickups and a bolt-on neck. And this one is made of Alder, not Maple like most of them. The Pickups are Bill Lawrence designed Alnico Single Coils that are prized for their snappy and bright tonality. The unique switching offers a wide variety of useful tones. On the 4 way chicken head; 1) neck + middle, 2), middle + bridge 3) all three together, and 4) neck and bridge out of phase. The toggle switch bypassed the entire 4 position rotary switch circuit and made one straight connection to the bridge pick-up. 24.5" scale, 12" radius, 7.45lbs. Comes safely packed in the SKB Hard case in the photos.
The nut measures 1.7", neck depth is .80"-.93" at the 1st and 12th frets respectively. It's a nice medium C Norlin era neck profile. Freshly strung and accurately intonated with D'Addario XL 10-46 nickel strings and perfect low factory spec action at 1.75mm-1.3mm. The neck is straight, the truss rod turns in both directions, and the relief is currently set for optimum playability. The frets have been leveled, crowned and polished - there wasn't a lot of fret wear so not was removed from the fret height. These are the Norlin wide and low frets that left the factory around .040" and they measure in the .035" range now so there it lots of life left here. It plays very easilty like this era's fretless wonder was meant to play. There are a few scratches and dings as pictured. It remains in excellent playable condition with no dead spots, only limited buzzing if you play hard on the low action.
