Description

Constant Q Filters

The modern generation of graphic equalizers

uses the constant Q topology pioneered by BSS Audio, meaning the filter width is constant regardless of the fader gain setting.

Compared to earlier "gyrator" filters, constant Q filters offer smoother and more predictable interaction between adjacent faders, and the resulting EQ curve more closely resembles actual fader positions.

More Gain Control per Filter

Each EQ fader has +/-15 dB of adjustable gain, more than many competing graphic equalizers. The faders are 45 mm long-throw types for precise control.

High-Pass Filter

The FCS-966 also features a sweepable high-pass filter that can be used very effectively to restrict low-energy output for better amplifier and speaker performance. Stage monitors also benefit from the application of a high-pass filter to remove bass signals, such as vocal-only wedges.

BSS

Audio strives to provide engineers with information, and the FCS-966's 8-segment LED meter displays the output level and warns of signal clipping in the EQ. When the unit is switched to bypass mode, the meter reads the input level, allowing precise matching of dry and EQed signals using the gain control.

Center Bypass

When an EQ fader is in the center detent position, the filter is automatically bypassed for optimal performance.

Inputs/Outputs

All inputs and outputs of the FCS-966 are electronically balanced, with optional transformer balancing. To facilitate installation of the FCS-966, we have provided three different interface connectors: XLR type, 1/4" TRS jack, and Phoenix/Combicon screw terminals.

Relay Bypass

The EQ IN buttons switch the EQ path

in the circuit. When disabled or in the event of a power failure, a high-quality relay switches the input signal directly to the output connectors.

Control Descriptions

Faders

30 EQ filter faders on ISO centers, each with a nominal gain of +/-15 dB. Positive center detent on the 45 mm long-throw precision faders.

HP Filter

Sweeping high-pass filter, adjustable frequency from OUT (flat) to 250 Hz. Smooth-shelf filter

LF Contour, +/-6 dB gain at 50 Hz. Smooth-shelf filter HF Contour, +/-6 dB gain at 14 kHz. GAIN Used for global adjustment of unity gain. Adjustable from -infinity to +10 dB. CLIP Triple-point clipping detector that indicates red when the internal signal is clipping at one of three critical points. The LED meter displays the output signal level (input signal when the EQ is bypassed) from -24 dBu to +18 dBu in 8 steps.
