The Buchla Easel Command is a brand new revision of Don Buchla's iconic 208 stored program source — the core of the Music Easel — and a highly capable semi-modular synthesizer that has found favour with thousands of musicians the world over. Buchla's own Joel Davel led the charge to create this new version of the legendary Music Easel instrument with more modular flexibility and independence, while also providing the means to easily interface with more devices, such as DAWs like Ableton and MIDI controllers. This instrument encapsulates many of the tools and the spirit of what is now often called "West Coast" synthesis — and while you can think of it as an experimental subtractive monosynth, its power lies in its potential for deviating from many now-standard synthesis concepts.

Key elements of its design:

  • 208C Voice Engine A 5-step sequencer, three-stage function generator, a pulser/clock generator, two oscillators, and two low-pass gates form the backbone of the synthesizer's architecture. The semi-modular audio path contains two oscillators, two lowpass gates, a signal mixer, and a fully analog signal path. The complex oscillator features an integrated "timbre" wavefolder and sine-to-triangle/square/spike wave crossfading.
  • Fully Analog Signal Path The Easel Command is fully analog in its default configuration, providing the unique and exquisite Buchla experience with greater functionality. If no aux input is present, analog white noise is generated using the 266 circuit.
  • MIDI & CV Integration MIDI input via USB-B and DIN is standard on the Easel Command, along with two ¼" audio outputs, a 3.5 mm 1V/oct input (mixed to the keyboard input), and a 3.5 mm Gate input (converted into a Buchla keyboard pulse with sustain). A MIDI A USB Host expansion port is also optionally available.
  • Expanded Audio & CV Connectivity Five additional audio connections provide independent inputs and outputs from the oscillators and gates, plus an FM input to the modulation oscillator. Five additional banana CV connections allow control of knobs and faders and the ability to send pulses independently to different inputs.
  • Eurorack-Compatible Inputs Eurorack 1V/oct and Gate inputs on the rear of the case enable easy interfacing with Eurorack gear and external controllers.
  • Trimmable & Configurable The listed oscillator frequencies are more accurate and the scaled fader input range is trimmable from the old range to 1.2V/oct. Oscillators can be trimmed to your desired volts-per-octave range for both the keyboard and fader inputs, and modulation oscillator and envelope generator inputs can be trimmed to work with typical input ranges. Switches and jumpers allow the new banana inputs — for the modulation oscillator and sustain — to control the sequencer stages instead.
  • Future-Ready Architecture A single circuit board design makes the 208C module both case-friendly and easier to service, allowing it to also fit into a Buchla 200e case. Standard headers for the program card connector allow for future iProgramCard-like preset control, and new connectors support an optional stereo digital FX add-on that will deliver true stereo outputs on the MIX OUT and headphone outputs.
  • Color-Coded Panel Design The modulation oscillator section is colored green so that each main section has its own distinct color. The Pulser now features a dedicated single-pulse switch and mode distinction.
