Here is a distinctive and increasingly hard-to-find Danelectro Hodad electric guitar, finished in beautiful Black Sparkle and complete with its factory “D”-branded vibrato tailpiece and a deluxe padded gig bag.
Made in Korea during Danelectro’s late-1990s/early-2000s revival period, the Hodad was promoted as the company’s ultimate surf guitar. Its retro double-cutaway body, cream side binding, large Danelectro headstock logo, sparkling finish, and extensive chrome hardware give it an unmistakable space-age appearance.
The Hodad is equipped with four lipstick pickups arranged as two humbucking pairs. It has separate volume and tone controls for each pickup pair, along with a three-way selector switch. The push/pull tone controls provide additional tonal versatility: one activates coil tapping, while the other produces an out-of-phase sound when both pickups are selected. This makes it capable of everything from bright Danelectro jangle and classic surf tones to fuller rock and garage-guitar sounds.
The roller bridge works together with the factory vibrato system for smooth operation and improved tuning stability. Other features include a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, 21 frets, Gotoh tuners, and a semi-hollow Masonite-style body.
This guitar is in very good used condition. The finish, neck, fingerboard, frets, electronics, and chrome hardware all present very nicely. As shown in the close-up photographs, there are a few minor scratches and marks in the cream side binding near the output jack, along with other very light evidence of normal handling. Nothing shown detracts significantly from its excellent overall appearance.
It weighs 7 pounds, 6.52 ounces and carries serial number 010D09968. A very nice deluxe padded gig bag is included.
