One of Yamaha's finest electric guitars from the legendary Nippon Gakki era.

Offered here is a beautiful and highly collectible 1978 Yamaha Super Flighter SF1000, manufactured in Japan during what many enthusiasts consider Yamaha's golden age of electric guitar production.

The Super Flighter series was Yamaha's flagship solid-body line of the late 1970s. Rather than producing a simple copy of an American guitar, Yamaha developed its own high-end instrument featuring premium materials, outstanding craftsmanship and several innovative features that were ahead of their time. Today, the SF1000 is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and best-built Japanese guitars of the era, often earning the nickname "Les Paul Killer."

This particular guitar remains remarkably original and is accompanied by its original Yamaha hard shell case, making it an increasingly difficult package to find today.

About the Model

Produced between 1977 and 1980, the SF1000 represented the top model of Yamaha's first-generation Super Flighter series.

Unlike the lower SF models, the SF1000 received:

  • premium ebony fingerboard
  • original Yamaha F-I humbuckers
  • factory Bi-Sound (Coil Split) system
  • gold hardware
  • highest-grade appointments throughout

The Bi-Sound system was one of Yamaha's signature innovations, allowing each humbucker to be switched into a convincing single-coil sound while retaining excellent clarity and versatility. Even today it remains one of the best factory coil-splitting systems of the vintage era.

Tone

The combination of the resonant body construction, ebony fingerboard and original Yamaha F-I pickups produces an exceptionally balanced sound.

Expect:

  • warm, rich humbucker tones
  • excellent sustain
  • articulate mids
  • tight bass response
  • sparkling coil-split sounds with impressive clarity

Whether you're playing blues, fusion, classic rock, jazz or heavier rock styles, the SF1000 delivers outstanding versatility.

Condition

The guitar is in Very Good vintage condition.

Considering it is nearly fifty years old, it has been extremely well preserved.

It shows honest signs of careful use including light scratches, small dents and natural ageing consistent with its age.

A very small finish crack is visible where the ebony fingerboard meets the neck. This is purely cosmetic and affects only the lacquer finish. It is a common occurrence on vintage guitars fitted with ebony fingerboards, as ebony and maple expand and contract differently with changes in temperature and humidity over many years. It has absolutely no effect on the structural integrity or stability of the instrument.

The frets remain in very good condition.

Technical Condition

The guitar has been professionally inspected and is ready to play.

  • Original Yamaha F-I pickups
  • Original factory Bi-Sound (coil split) system works perfectly
  • All potentiometers operate smoothly without noise
  • All switches function correctly
  • Truss rod operates properly
  • Professionally set up with 10–46 strings

No additional work is required.
