The Empirical Labs FATSO Jr. EL7 (Full Analog Tape Simulator and Optimizer) is a digitally controlled analog processor designed to recreate the desirable sonic characteristics of magnetic tape, vintage tube equipment, and Class A electronics. Combining harmonic saturation, high-frequency smoothing, transformer emulation, and compression, FATSO Jr. adds warmth, density, and cohesion to individual tracks and complete mixes.

Its analog saturation circuitry generates harmonics and gently rounds signal peaks, reproducing the soft-clipping characteristics of magnetic tape. The adjustable Warmth circuit dynamically reduces excessive high-frequency energy, helping smooth harsh transients and soften the brittle character sometimes associated with digital recordings. The switchable Tranny circuit introduces transformer-style coloration, adding low-frequency harmonics, weight, and depth.

FATSO Jr. also incorporates four distinct Empirical Labs compression modes. Buss provides gentle, musical compression ideal for stereo mixes, while GP offers smooth, general-purpose dynamic control. Tracking delivers 1176-inspired compression suitable for vocals and instruments, and Spank provides aggressive limiting inspired by classic SSL talkback compressors. Spank can also be combined with the other modes for additional compression characteristics.
