Passive studio monitors, on the other hand, require the connection to a power amp of your choosing—like older hi-fi home stereo speakers you might use with your record player. There are plenty of passive studio monitors well-worth the money (the Yamaha NS-10s are a popular choice), but the need for extra gear is still a worthy consideration.
