As a renowned manufacturer of high-quality hollow-body guitars, Gibson's decision to produce a solid-body guitar in 1952 broke with its established philosophy and ultimately paved the way for rock and roll. It was likely "Franny" Beecher, Bill Haley's lead guitarist, who played a Gibson Les Paul Custom and created a previously unheard sound, thus ushering in a new musical genre. The Gibson Gold-Top, later called the Standard, evolved from 1952 onwards with various string mounting options and, from 1956, was available in a version with a stop tailpiece and Tune-o-Matic ABR1 bridge.After 1958, Gibson moved away from the chunky neck profile. 1959 can be considered a transitional year in this respect; by 1960, very slim necks were being produced.The 1960 Reissue shown here accurately replicates the guitars from around the mid-1960s. It is reproduced with meticulous attention to detail and, following Tom Murphy's specifications, is modeled after a well-maintained original.
