The Story behind its design
Karl Sandoval began his Luthier career in southern California in the 70s building guitars for host of local guitar innovators that included Eddie Van Halen and George Lynch. Karl had been working with Wayne Charvel at the Charvel guitar shop when he received a call from then Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads, telling him that he was backstage with George Lynch doing a show and got to play a custom V he made for George.
The main design feature of the guitar Sandoval made for Lynch was a Danelectro neck bolted to a V-shaped body. Before Karl was building guitars on his own, he built guitars with Danelectro necks because he liked how the action could be low. What impressed Karl was the ability to pull up the high E string with a tremolo bar and it wouldn’t fret out due to lack of arch across the fretboard, resulting in a very unique feel. Prior to building George Lynch's V, Sandoval was responsible for the radically shaped, yellow “Megazone” for Eddie Van Halen also featuring a Danelectro neck. One
On July 3, 1979 Randy Rhoads first met with Sandoval to discuss his ideas for his own version of what he had seen on George Lynch’s Flying V.
Sandoval remembers Randy walking around his garage discussing this guitar ... talking about the headstock, the color, the bowtie inlay on the neck. He wanted the Les Paul’s double humbuckers and the Fender Strat tremolo. He also asked about putting the toggle switch and the output jack on the upper wing. Randy also mentioned that he did not want a bolt-on neck because he wanted the guitar to have the playability of a Gibson.
So Sandoval suggested to Randy ‘Let’s come up with a different headstock, a different color, come up with an identity.’ To which Randy replied… ‘V body with polka dots’. Randy wanted 3/4" dots painted all over the guitar, and to give it perspective, he didn’t want them randomly placed on the guitar. Randy drew up the shape of the guitar’s headstock on school notebook paper in pencil and pen, in design that was shaped like a harpoon or an arrowhead.
The outcome of these elements was a Flying V shaped guitar made by Karl Sandoval but based on Randy Rhoads’s ideas.
This guitar was commissioned in October of 2015 and completed in February of 2016 and the 109th Polka Dot V ever made by Karl Sandoval. We wanted something true to Randy’s Vision with a special upgrade, so we settled on an Ebony neck for its darker look, hard playability and a tone that cuts through like Randy’s playing.
While this guitar design has been copied by other makers, it rarely is built to this legendary luthiers quality and rarely with Randy’s custom headstock, fretboard radius, Dimarizio Super PAF & Distortion Pickups and Strat style tremolo bridge. We specially made sure Karl personally signed the back of the headstock and hand wrote the serial.
Karl Sandoval V’s custom paint job has come to represent Randy’s Rhoads and has been used on many products to represent Randy's legacy.
