Up for sale, a 1990 Greco SG Standard model SS-600 in excellent condition and in good working order. Crafted in Japan at the famed Fujigen factory (not coincidentally also the birthplace of all of the Gibson-sanctioned "Orville" branded guitars meant only for the Japanese domestic market), this Greco comes at the tail end of the "Mint Collection" years. The Mint Collection has long been lauded as one of the high points of the "lawsuit era" Japanese guitars, and while no legal action was leveled against Greco for these guitars, the stunning accuracy with which Greco captured the nuances of Gibson's most classic models can't be denied! This guitar boasts PAF-style "Screamin" humbuckers, braided pickup leads, and a vibrant Cherry finish accented by a small batwing pickguard to evoke early '60s specifications. At 6lbz 8oz, this Greco is a very lightweight and acoustically lively instrument, with a clear, authoritative tone that translates well through the pickups. The bridge pickup has a growly, biting sound which pairs well with the smoother and warmer sounding neck pickup. We've professionally setup this Greco here at our shop, Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, and the guitar has been dialed in with optimal intonation and fresh 10-46 strings.
The mahogany neck has a medium C shaped profile that borders on the more slender side of things but still has generous shoulders for a substantial feel. The bound rosewood fretboard features stock fretwire, which has similar width and height to what Gibson was using in the early '60s. These frets have well rounded fret crowns and play very cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings in the first position. The nut width measures a full 1 11/16" and the scale length is 24 3/4". The headstock features the Greco logo inlayed in pearloid, as well as stock Kluson-style tuning machines which turn very smoothly and hold pitch as they should.
All of the electronics work as they should, with full size pots and impeccable factory wiring. The stock nickel hardware has only the lightest surface patina to give it that genuine vintage look, and all of the original plastic parts (knobs, pickguard, neck spacer) are intact and in fine shape aside from one tiny chip on the edge of one of the tone knobs. Cosmetically, this Greco shows its fair share of tiny nicks on the edges of the body horns and headstock wings, with some finish scratches and small dings on the top behind the bridge and on the back of the body.
A hardshell case is included. Clearly designed for an offset body instrument, this case still fits the SG very well with proper support for the headstock joint and angle. All latches work and the case has a clean black tolex exterior.
