Katsumi Arai No. 73 – 1972

A fine early-1970s guitar by Katsumi Arai (b. 1941), one of Japan's respected makers of handmade classical guitars.

Arai established his own workshop in 1968, having studied guitar making with Tsunasaburo Kurosawa and Morio Tazaki. He had previously studied guitar with the renowned Japanese guitarist and composer Yuquijiro Yocoh, best known internationally for Sakura Theme and Variations (Sakura Variations).

Arai also had a close musical relationship with the distinguished guitarist Kunio Shichinohe (1947–1994), who played and praised Arai's instruments. Arai's guitars have consequently been associated with some of Japan's leading classical guitar tradition of the period.

The guitar

This is a particularly fine example of Arai's work. The workmanship is precise throughout, and the guitar has survived 54 years remarkably well: there are no cracks or structural damage.

The neck is straight and the guitar has recently been refretted, giving clean and precise fretting.

The sound is clear, open and highly responsive, with plenty of tonal flexibility. It is an instrument with considerable character, suitable both for classical repertoire and for a player who wants to explore a wide range of colours and dynamics.
