About this listing
Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at an excellent classic microphone from the 1960's / 70's era made by Shure Brothers that was intended to be used as a studio mic and happened to be a great snare mic as well. It should be noted right away that this mic is non-working with a dead original element but it comes with the period Atlas DS-14 "boomerang" stand and would make an ideal display, prop or repair piece due to it's incredibly nice physical condition. This model of mic was often used by some of the most famous musicians of that era and this was used extensively by Robert Plant in his early days with Led Zeppelin. The 545S was a variant of the 545 and closely related to the SM-57. It has a rich history and one of the finest dynamic cardioid mics sold by Shure or any mic company for that matter. The 545 series was originally offered in the early 1960's and was made in America up until about the mid to ate 1980's where it was eventually moved to Mexico for production then was discontinued in the 1990's. The SM-57 is still being made to day but they come out of China now. This Shure Brothers 545S model dynamic cardioid microphone came with the satin chrome finish and had excellent uni-directional characteristics. A very popular mic for broadcasting and singing purposes that was set at low impedance having a warm, smooth tone with just the right amount of bass and superb frequency response but again this one no longer works. Pic # 2 is from an old 1970's era catalog showing this very model along with the other 545 variants being sold at that particular time. This 545S has the unique lower pistol grip with the on / off switch and older 4 pin cable attachment. The mic has been cleaned and everything is tight. Nothing loose or unfinished. The 545S was a bit more expensive then the standard 545 version. Many mics of the 1950's to 70's had the lower pistol grip and it really lost favor by the 1980's as all the mic manufactures stop making their mics with the built in lower grip. The modern mic used nothing more than a mic clip now. More practical but less intriguing. The 545S has a classic mid century vibe. This example has virtually no cosmetic wear as seen in the pictures provided and one of the nicest examples you could ask for. The satin chrome has a very nice luster. No scratches or pitting on the satin chrome. The front screen is free of odors, tarnish or dents. There are some very lite scuff marks on the the black plastic cartridge but otherwise the mic is quite beautiful. The Shure label looks very nice and completely legible. The mic comes with a period Atlas DS-14 model desk stand that has a classic midcentury vibe. Very Star Trek in nature and it makes a stable platform for the 545S mic. The DS-14 is a cast iron design with a nice original painted finish and a short chrome riser. The stand looks as nice as the mic and comes with it's original felt pads. The stand with mic is appx 11 inches tall X 6 inches wide X 7 inches deep. This is going to make a very nice accent piece anywhere it's displayed and would make a very nice award for anybody in the music or broadcasting industry. As with all my vintage microphones...
