Elta Music Solar 42F — Analog Ambient Drone / Semi-Modular Experimental Synthesizer

Selling my Elta Music Solar 42F, a unique analog microtonal ambient/drone synthesizer built for evolving textures, cinematic soundscapes, experimental performance, and hands-on composition. This is one of those rare instruments that feels less like a conventional synth and more like a self-contained sound environment: drones, shifting harmonics, unstable organic textures, sci-fi atmospheres, touch-controlled melodic lines, distortion, filtering, and onboard effects all living in one very playable desktop instrument.

The Solar 42F is the refined “F” version of Elta’s Solar 42 platform, following the lineage of the Solar 50. It is designed around six drone voices, two volt-per-octave VCO voices, a touch-sensitive keypad controller, joystick, 5-step sequencer, two sample & hold generators, two LFOs, pulse generators, stereo mixer, dual analog 12 dB Polivoks-style filters, and Elta’s cartridge-based effector system. Elta describes the instrument as an experimental electro-music machine inspired by early electronic instruments and science-fiction soundtrack work.

The Solar 42F adds several important refinements over the original Solar 42, including a LIN/EXP CV input switch, sub oscillators in the volt/octave voices, reduced noise improvements, clearer input/output labelling, Band Pass and Stereo Distortion filter modes, per-channel effector bypasses, and LED indication in the joystick section.

Sonically, it excels at huge, layered ambient beds, unstable analog drones, Blade Runner-style pads, microtonal clusters, noise-organic textures, slowly evolving chords, and eerie soundtrack material. It can also be tamed into more melodic use with the two V/Oct voices, touch keyboard, sequencer, and CV patching. Juno’s review describes it as a distinctive analog drone and ambience synth that can move from experimental microtonal performance into more conventional melodic or harmonic territory.

Notes

This is a very characterful instrument. It is not a conventional preset-based synth, and that is the point. The Solar 42F rewards hands-on exploration, slow tuning, live patching, and performance gestures. It is especially strong for ambient, drone, soundtrack work, experimental electronic music, noise textures, and generative-style sessions.
