The SRD900-CTL is a perfect example: behind its instantly recognizable Ibanez SR appearance lies a particularly original design, combining the comfort and versatility of a modern electric bass with a much more acoustic approach to tone. The first surprise comes from its remarkably successful semi-hollow construction. Ibanez has retained a slim, contoured and ergonomic body directly inspired by the SR architecture, giving you the effortless playing feel and comfort that have long been hallmarks of the brand's basses. Unlike a traditional SR, however, the semi-hollow body gives the instrument a real personality, with a more open, lively response and a very interesting acoustic feel beneath the fingers. It is a rare combination: you get the lightness and ergonomics of a modern bass while benefiting from the added richness and resonance provided by the semi-hollow construction. The SRD900 goes even further with its particularly sophisticated electronics. The two Nordstrand Big Break pickups deliver excellent definition, plenty of dynamics and a powerful, precise and highly nuanced electric bass tone. They are complemented by the remarkable AeroSilk piezo system, integrated directly into the bridge, which provides a much more acoustic response, with greater attack, clarity and character in the midrange. Blending the magnetic pickups with the piezo therefore opens up an unusually broad tonal palette, ranging from a very modern electric bass sound to warmer, more organic tones reminiscent of an upright bass or acoustic bass. The choice of materials and hardware is equally worthy of the Bass Workshop positioning, with a 5-piece Maple/Walnut neck, Panga Panga fingerboard, 30 frets and AeroSilk MR5 bridge. The whole instrument remains fully consistent with Ibanez's philosophy: an extremely comfortable, precise and modern instrument, here placed at the service of a much more experimental design. The SRD900 is therefore a particularly appealing bass for musicians looking for something beyond yet another variation on a traditional electric bass. Its semi-hollow construction combined with a slim, ergonomic SR-style body is truly its defining feature: it offers the comfort of a modern bass while adding an acoustic dimension and a sonic personality rarely found on this type of instrument.A superb example of the Bass Workshop Series, both original and versatile, and genuinely different. A bass that is well worth trying, as both its response and its tonal possibilities are far from ordinary.
