The Boss PSM-5 is a practical vintage utility pedal that combines master bypass switching with power distribution for a compact pedal setup. Introduced in the early 1980s, it was designed to let players route their guitar signal through an external effects chain via the send and return loop, while using the footswitch to select either direct signal or the processed signal. That makes it especially useful for players who want to switch several pedals in and out at once without having to engage each unit individually.
Unlike a standard effect pedal, the PSM-5 does not shape your core tone with drive, modulation, or delay. Its role is signal management and pedalboard convenience. The layout includes guitar input, amp output, send, return, a 9V input for the adaptor, and a 9V output connection for powering other compatible pedals. Boss specified the PSM-5 as being able to supply stable DC power to up to seven 9V effect units, which made it a smart all-in-one solution for streamlined live and rehearsal setups in the early pedalboard era.
