HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT
The Gefell MV 692 and M71 represent a classic combination from the East German tradition of precision condenser microphone engineering. Developed within the modular microphone system of VEB Mikrofontechnik Gefell, the two components combine a discrete solid-state microphone amplifier with a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser capsule.
Following the division of Germany after World War II, This system was the heart of Gefell
The MV 692 was designed as a versatile amplifier platform for interchangeable Gefell capsules, allowing engineers to select different polar patterns and acoustic characteristics without replacing the complete microphone.
Paired with the M71, the system offers a classic large-diaphragm cardioid microphone configuration, combining the precision of Gefell's transistor electronics with the natural, balanced sound of its traditional capsule designs.
MODIFICATIONS & RESTORATION
M71 Capsule – Thiersch Diaphragm Restoration
SERIANL NUMBER 428 - Very early capsule
The original Gefell M71 large-diaphragm cardioid capsule has been professionally reskinned by Siegfried Thiersch of Thiersch Elektroakustik.
Thiersch's connection to Gefell extends far beyond conventional microphone restoration. Having worked as a development engineer at Gefell, he was directly involved in the development of the legendary MV 69 series of modular condenser microphone amplifiers, including the MV 692.
In 1978, Thiersch established an officially authorized repair workshop for VEB Mikrofontechnik Gefell, maintaining this relationship until 1993. His company subsequently continued independently, becoming internationally recognized for its work on historic Neumann and Gefell condenser capsules, particularly the M7 family and vintage nickel-diaphragm designs.
The M71 restoration was carried out with the aim of preserving the capsule's original acoustic characteristics, including its sensitivity, frequency response, and natural tonal balance.
MV 692 Amplifier – Thiersch 48V Phantom Power & XLR Conversion
The MV 692 amplifier was also professionally modified by Thiersch Elektroakustik, converting the original vintage electronics to operate with standard 48V phantom power and a balanced XLR connection.
This modification is particularly significant given Thiersch's direct involvement in the original development of the MV amplifier platform.
The conversion allows the microphone to operate directly with modern studio equipment while retaining its original modular construction and characteristic solid-state amplification.
The amplifier was subsequently cleaned and serviced in 2025.
Together, these two interventions represent an especially meaningful restoration: a classic Gefell microphone system restored and modernized by the workshop of one of the engineers involved in developing its original amplifier platform.
MV 692 – AMPLIFIER & CIRCUIT ARCHITECTURE
The MV 692 employs a discrete solid-state FET amplifier circuit, designed to provide a stable, low-noise electrical interface for Gefell's interchangeable condenser capsules.
Its design prioritizes linear amplification, reliable operation, and preservation of the capsule's acoustic characteristics.
The amplifier features:
- Discrete FET solid-state circuitry
- Factory-converted 48V phantom powering
- Balanced XLR output
- –10 dB attenuation pad
- Switchable low-cut filter
- Modular Gefell screw-mount capsule interface
- Robust metal housing with effective electrical shielding
The integrated pad and low-cut filter provide useful flexibility when recording loud instruments, close-miked sources, or material requiring additional low-frequency control.
The amplifier's restrained sonic character allows the attached capsule to remain the principal influence on the microphone's frequency response and directional behavior.
M71 – LARGE-DIAPHRAGM CARDIOID CAPSULE
The M71 is a classic Gefell large-diaphragm condenser capsule featuring a fixed cardioid polar pattern.
Its pressure-gradient acoustic design uses carefully engineered rear sound entry and acoustic resistance to establish directional sensitivity.
Unlike electronically switchable multi-pattern microphones, the M71 is optimized specifically for cardioid operation.
The capsule is appreciated for its balanced midrange, smooth high-frequency reproduction, and controlled directional response.
The Thiersch restoration is particularly significant for a capsule of this age. Diaphragm condition and tension are fundamental to condenser microphone performance, influencing sensitivity, frequency response, and transient behavior.
A professionally restored capsule can therefore offer an important functional advantage over an unrestored vintage example.
SONIC CHARACTER
The combination of the MV 692 and M71 produces a composed, natural, and detailed microphone sound.
The M71 provides a smooth tonal balance, with a particularly pleasing midrange and a high-frequency response that avoids exaggerated brightness.
The MV 692 complements these characteristics through clean, controlled amplification.
The complete system is characterized by:
- Natural and well-defined midrange
- Smooth, restrained high-frequency presentation
- Clear transient reproduction
- Controlled low-frequency response
- Musical detail without excessive presence emphasis
- Classic Gefell large-diaphragm condenser character
Rather than producing an aggressively modern or hyped sound, this microphone emphasizes tonal balance and realistic reproduction.
It is particularly appealing for engineers seeking vintage condenser character without sacrificing clarity or recording precision.
APPLICATIONS
The MV 692 / M71 system is well suited for a broad range of professional recording applications.
Vocals & Speech
The smooth midrange and controlled presence make the system an attractive choice for natural vocal recordings, spoken word, and broadcast-style applications.
Acoustic Instruments
Its balanced response makes it suitable for acoustic guitar, strings, woodwinds, and other instruments where natural timbre and transient detail are important.
Piano & Classical Recording
The system's restrained tonal character is particularly useful when recording sources that benefit from an honest, unexaggerated presentation.
Studio & Vintage Microphone Collections
With its factory-converted amplifier and professionally restored capsule, the microphone is both a practical recording instrument and an interesting example of historical Gefell engineering.
CONDITION & AUTHENTICITY
This system combines an original vintage Gefell amplifier and M71 capsule with professional work carried out by specialists familiar with the original microphone designs.
The MV 692 retains its modular architecture and original operating controls, while the factory XLR and phantom-power conversion makes it convenient for contemporary studio use.
The M71 retains its historical capsule construction and has received a professional replacement diaphragm by Siegfried Thiersch.
The result is a complete, restored vintage microphone system intended for continued professional recording use.
The Gefell MV 692 XLR + M71 is an excellent example of the modular condenser microphone philosophy developed in Gefell.
Its discrete FET amplifier, classic large-diaphragm cardioid capsule, and robust mechanical construction reflect an era of microphone engineering focused on accuracy, serviceability, and long-term performance.
With both MV 692 professionally converted for modern 48V phantom power and the M71 capsule Updated by Thiersch himself, this particular system offers an appealing balance of originality, restoration quality, and practical usability.
A classic German condenser microphone system, carefully preserved and ready for modern studio recording.
