About this listing
Own a Piece of Rare Drumming HistoryAvailable now at Cottonwood Music Emporium, this incredibly rare, first-generation Ludwig Acrolite is the "holy grail" for vintage snare collectors. Widely referred to as the "Prototype Acrolite," this early 1960s model features the legendary, highly textured "orange peel" aluminum shell. With rumored production numbers of only around 200 units, finding one in this condition—and as a complete original package—is exceptionally rare. The "Orange Peel" DifferenceUnlike the smooth or black galaxy finishes of later decades, this first-generation model utilizes an aggressively textured, uncoated aluminum shell. Combined with its welded interior plate and seamless design, this snare delivers the crisp, dry, and incredibly articulate crack that made the Acrolite a staple in recording studios worldwide, but with the unique tonal character unique to Ludwig's earliest aluminum runs.True Vintage Authenticity & HardwareThis drum is a genuine time capsule. It features its original pre-serial brass Keystone badge, dating it squarely to the introductory 1962–1963 era. It retains its original aluminum "bowtie" lugs, a pristine P-83 throw-off strainer (complete with vintage snare string), and comes paired with an era-correct, collectible WFL flat-base snare stand.Condition & PlayabilityThis snare has been meticulously preserved. The shell interior is remarkably clean, and the hardware shows minimal wear for a 60+ year-old instrument. To preserve its history while ensuring it is ready for the studio, we have fitted the batter side with a fresh Remo Ambassador Coated head. The original vintage Ludwig drum heads are included in the sale. What’s Included in this Collector's Package:Early 1960s Ludwig Acrolite Snare Drum (Textured "Orange Peel" Finish)Pre-Serial Brass Keystone BadgeOriginal Aluminum Bowtie Lugs & P-83 StrainerVintage WFL Flat-Base Snare StandOriginal Ludwig Square Drop-In Hard CaseOriginal vintage drum heads (unmounted)Currently fitted with a new Remo Ambassador Coated batter headWhether you are a serious vintage drum collector looking for that missing prototype or a studio drummer chasing the ultimate aluminum snare tone, this early '60s Ludwig Acrolite from Cottonwood Music Emporium is a museum-quality find.
