Boss MZ-2 Digital Metalizer MIJ – Cult Late-’80s Boss Hybrid DistortionThe Boss MZ-2 Digital Metalizer is one of the strangest, most underrated and increasingly collectible pedals Boss ever produced.
Made in Japan during the late 1980s golden era of experimental Boss compact pedals, the MZ-2 combined aggressive analogue-style distortion with early digital ambience processing in a way that was wildly ahead of its time. Originally marketed toward the rising high-gain scene of the era, the pedal has since become a genuine cult favourite among shoegaze players, alternative guitarists, experimental musicians and vintage Boss collectors.
And honestly, there is still nothing quite like it.
The MZ-2 delivers thick, saturated distortion tones combined with built-in digital ambience and delay textures that create huge, atmospheric walls of sound. From chainsaw-like late-’80s metal tones to haunting ambient textures and lo-fi alternative sounds, this pedal comfortably lives in that wonderfully weird space where vintage Boss engineering became unexpectedly creative.
Compared to many modern high-gain pedals, the MZ-2 has a uniquely raw and characterful voice. Slightly unruly in the best possible way.
This Japanese-made example shows honest cosmetic wear consistent with age and use, exactly what you would hope to see from a pedal designed to make loud amplifiers sound even more unreasonable.

The MZ-2 spent years flying under the radar while players chased Tube Screamers and delays. Then the shoegaze and alternative crowd discovered it and prices quietly started climbing.
Because sometimes the weird pedals age best.
At Max Guitar we have quietly become one of Europe’s favourite destinations for vintage and pre-owned effects. From ultra-early Japanese Boss pedals to obscure cult classics and rare analogue oddities, we carefully source pieces with real history, character and collector appeal.
The place to be for used effects.
A wonderfully quirky and increasingly hard-to-find Japanese Boss pedal from one of the company’s most experimental periods.
