This is a late 1960s model from the Kalamazoo factory, where Gibson acoustic guitars were also produced.
Epiphone / FT-79 Cherry Red
This particular guitar is in the rare "Cherry Red" color, which, like Gibson, was only produced for a short period of three years, from 1967 to 1969.
Cherry Red fades differently in modern times, and each guitar has its own unique character.
It's a wonderful color that reflects the history each instrument has walked.
This particular guitar boasts a beautiful pale reddish-brown color, a lustrous and sophisticated finish, and is a truly superb example of exceptional craftsmanship.
With its screw-on pickguard, upper belly adjustable bridge, wood saddle, and being from the final round-shoulder period, this is a truly rare example.
I happened to have a J-45 Cherry Red from the same year, so I compared them.
Even though they were made in the same factory, with the same wood materials and almost identical designs, the sound is surprisingly different from other Gibsons of the same era.
While it's true that this guitar has a longer scale length compared to a J-45, this particular instrument is characterized by its somewhat rustic and woody tone. Nevertheless, you can enjoy a genuine vintage sound.
It's a well-known anecdote that The Beatles' "Yesterday," arguably the most famous song using a Texan pickup, was played in whole-step down tuning. This guitar, when played with a G chord in whole-step down tuning, delivers that unmistakable sound.
Epiphone remains an indispensable brand supporting acoustic guitar users worldwide, and the spirit of New York craftsmanship lives on.
Experiencing a page of that history is a truly precious opportunity.
