The PEQ622 is a highly versatile equalizer because each band can be tuned to any frequency using the 3-way toggles and it includes variable LPF and HPF on both channels.
Hyfax in the wild are rare. This EQ was designed for live-sound master-EQ, studio mixing and room response (speaker correction). It adheres to broadcast standards. Made by Fuji Onkyo. Yamaha purchased this company in the past. The EQ favors cutting frequencies over boosting and provides 6 bands for 2ch or 12 bands for 1ch spectrum-sweeping.
Features:
- 20dB of cut, 10dB of boost
- 6 bands for 2ch or 12 bands for 1ch operation (see cascade switch on the Eq).
- each band can be precisely moved between 20Hz and 20Khz (no limits regarding how much correction can happen where in the spectrum).
- each band can be focused to a single note (1/12th octave) or spread gently cover 2 octaves.
- each channel features a push-pot high-cut (2Khz-22Khz) and low-cut (20Hz-400Hz)
Impression:
The Hyfax presents as a transparent EQ and can make a room sound better or improve a mix without calling attention to itself. I like this EQ's bias towards cutting, which is probably part of the reason it is so neutral. FWIW, This is how mix engineers prefer to work (cuts over boosts). It's very unique, I've never seen an analog EQ setup like this.
The interface is well thought out, the knob size is comfortable and easy to operate and even the tension on the knobs is just right.
Condition and build quality:
Solid chassis, Quality knobs, excellent feeling to use. Switches feel robust. Layout is fast and friendly. Push-pots on the LPF/HPF filters are a nice touch. Everything works as expected.
Cosmetic:
Good. It has bit scratches please check the photos.
Comparison:
The closest US equivalent would be the Meyer CP-10 however it lacks so many features that it is basically outclassed.
Shortcomings of the Meyer CP10 are:
- HPF/LPF are always in (creating some phase shift)
- Only has 5 bands
- each band is a fixed frequency range (not user selectable)
- EQ bands can't go wider than 1 octave
- lacks cascade mode to link the left and right channels for 12-band mono EQ
- Only cuts to -15dB instead of -20dB
.
