Olds Super Bb trumpet 1946- Lacquered Brass / Nickel Silver
This is a 1946 Los Angeles Olds Super Bb trumpet. It is from an excellent era of Olds production right after WWII.
More information about Los Angeles Super trumpets can be found at our Super Evolution article.
This horn has all original parts and is clean and straight with no signs of any trauma or past repair. There is some pitting in the brass in various locations and the lacquer is pretty much gone, but it has a good overall cosmetic appearance and is in great playing condition. The valve compression is very good and all slides move smoothly. The Mother of Pearl on the finger buttons has a rich purple hue. The finger buttons are worn down a bit, adding to the vintage vibe of this horn, but still fully functional.
This is a Super from the early post-war era, which has these features:
1) It has the trombone lever water key on the third valve slide which was discontinued a few years after this horn was made
2) It has the flat style bracing which was also discontinued a few years later
3) It has a brass (rather than nickel silver) tone control band on the bell. Although there had been speculation by some in the past that this was a war time anomaly, it is actually only found on early post-war horns, in an era when brass was suddenly plentiful and nickel-silver became scarce.
4) It has a tuning slide brace. This feature was discontinued later in 1946.
5) It has a third slide stop rod. This feature was discontinued a year or so later.
6) it has a first slide adjustable saddle. This feature was also discontinued a year or so later.
7) It has a lightweight body and bell. The brass became thicker in Supers made a year later.
8) The tubing on the first slide saddle and third slide push rod is hollow, indicating these are the original parts. Olds began using solid brass for these parts shortly after this trumpet was made.
The nickel-plated valves have very good compression.
This trumpet clean inside and out. All slides are smooth. Engraving is sharp and clear. Matching serial numbers on the valve spring barrels, valve stems, and top caps. The last two digits of the serial number are on the slide tubes and bottom caps.
