A clock delay in 5HP that does one thing properly: it takes the rigidity out of a sequenced pattern.
Feed it a clock and each incoming pulse is held back by an amount you set, cycling through four stages in turn before starting over. Stage one might pass straight through, stage two lag slightly, stage three sit further behind, stage four land early again — and suddenly a metronomic four-on-the-floor has a feel to it. A reset input jumps back to stage one so it stays locked to the bar.
Three modes change what the delay times mean. In Absolute the times are fixed values, so the swing character stays constant while the tempo changes around it. In Proportional the delay is calculated from the gap between the last two clock pulses, so the groove scales with tempo and holds its shape whether you're at 90 or 140 BPM. Burst is the outlier: one incoming trigger fires all four stages in rapid succession, turning single hits into rolls and fills.
Each of the four delay times has its own CV input, so the amount of swing can itself be modulated — an envelope, an LFO or a random source patched here makes the feel drift over the course of a piece rather than sitting still. Maximum delay is a little over a second, which is long enough to use it as a rhythmic device in its own right rather than only as a subtle shuffle.
Worth being clear about the layout: there is one clock output. The four Time jacks are CV inputs for the delay stages, not separate outputs — some shop listings describe this incorrectly.
