Exar Electronix PN-04 Pig Nose 2004

I’m selling an Exar Electronix PN-04 Pig Nose, a particularly unique and fairly rare envelope filter.

The Pig Nose is a dynamic filter: the harder you play, the more the filter opens up, producing a brighter sound, while a softer attack results in a darker tone. It has a response somewhat similar to a wah, but is entirely controlled by your playing dynamics, without the need for an expression pedal.

The three controls — Attack, Sens and Depth — allow you to tailor the filter’s response to your instrument and playing style. It can range from a fairly subtle effect to much more pronounced sounds, with the characteristic “quack” that works particularly well for funk, grooves and more experimental tones.

The PN-04 was designed with particular attention to bass, but it also works very well with guitar. It offers an original alternative to classics such as the DOD 440 Envelope Filter, MXR Envelope Filter, Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron and Mu-Tron III, with a very direct and expressive approach.

Exar Electronix is now a discontinued brand, making its pedals particularly interesting for players and collectors looking for less common gear. The Pig Nose is also one of the more unusual pedals in the Exar range, alongside models such as the DQ-1 Doctor Q.
