EarthQuaker Devices is proud to introduce your new best friend, Gary. This little gem was designed by the one and only Lee Kiernan of the amazing and indispensable band IDLES!Gary was born from a simple request: create a compact version of the now-discontinued Gray Channel®, a mainstay in Lee's console and a key part of his signature drive tone. It all worked well, and it sounded pretty good, but Gary wanted us to dig deeper and explore its dark side a little more—Gary after dark, Gary on Saturday night. So, we sat him down and began the journey to understand the old Gare-Bear once and for all. The result is a dynamic and destructive pulse-width modulated fuzz paired with a natural-sounding op-amp overdrive.ControlsGo: Gain control for the overdrive. Turn it up to increase the op-amp's gain for fat, full distortion, or turn it down and crank it up. That's it, for use as a clean boost.That's it: Master volume for the overdrive side.Left Footswitch: OverdriveYes!: Sets the sensitivity of the envelope that controls the duty cycle of the square wave fuzz. The envelope is highly dependent on the input signal level, which can be affected by any gain pedals in front of Gary, the pickup power, the source instrument, etc.Oosh: Master volume for the fuzz side.Right Footswitch: FuzzDesign NoteGary's right brain is a dynamic and destructive fuzz, both dominant and interactive. It's a crushing fuzz sound with a variable pulse width controlled by the envelope and enough volume to make everything explode. This nasty little fuzz transforms the signal into a square wave and allows you to dynamically adjust the duty cycle with the attack of your pick. Yes! controls the sensitivity of the envelope. When turned all the way down, you get a pure, thick, and heavy square-wave fuzz sound that lasts for days and completely fades away when you stop playing. As you increase the Yes! control, the envelope becomes more interactive, and the pulse width narrows as you push it. As the pulse width narrows, the sound becomes more nasal and sharp, until it becomes so narrow that Gary retreats into his dark corner and disappears completely. In other words, at higher sensitivity settings, the sound disappears completely and slowly returns to Gary's big sound. With the right dynamics, this creates a truly fantastic effect that can sound like an amp exploding, coming in and out of life, blown through a phase shifter.Gary's left brain shows its softer side. This is a simple, natural-sounding overdrive that keeps the sound lively and makes the amp go crazy. This side is based on the green channel of our gray channel, which is our take on the classic little yellow overdrive that started it all for us. Lee used this pedal with the clipping switch permanently set to the center position, which removes all diodes from the circuit, producing a fat, cutting op-amp distortion with plenty of volume available. We've reproduced that sound here with extreme precision. Go sets the op-amp's drive and can range from a simple, full-range clean boost to smooth, natural distortion.
