Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar – Spanish guitar tradition from Valencia with nearly 100 years of history

Some guitars are not just instruments of their time, but offer a direct glimpse into the history of an entire guitar-making region. The Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar falls squarely into this category. Built in Valencia at a time when some of Spain’s most renowned workshops were active there, it combines nearly a century of history with that mature, rich tone that one always seeks in historic guitars—but rarely finds.

Telesforo Julve (1884–1945) holds a special place in the history of Valencian guitar making. He was a nephew of the luthier Andrés Marín and ran a workshop where well-known figures such as Ricardo Sanchis Nacher and Vicente Tatay later worked. In 1931, Julve also took over the workshop of Salvador Ibáñez e Hijos. This places the 1930 Telesforo Julve classical guitar right at an exciting turning point in this history.

Naturally, with an instrument of this age, it is no longer possible to determine the exact year of manufacture with certainty. However, based on the type of label used, the Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar can be dated to around 1930.

Even the choice of wood gives it a character all its own. A spruce top is paired with a walnut back, sides, and neck—a combination that visually complements the instrument’s warm character beautifully and also offers an interesting tonal alternative to the more common rosewood guitars.

And it is precisely in terms of sound that the Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar begins to tell its true story.

Its comparatively deep body gives the instrument an astonishing foundation. The sound is grand and almost majestic, yet remains soft and exceptionally musical. The guitar has power without ever becoming aggressive. Its bass notes have depth and substance, while the treble retains a pleasant sweetness and warmth.

What is particularly fascinating is the combination of clarity and tonal flexibility. Individual notes can be clearly distinguished from one another, yet they never sound sterile. Depending on how and where the string is struck, the Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar significantly changes its timbre. From warm and soft to present and clear, an astonishing range of timbres is available.

For us, that is precisely one of the great appeals of a truly good historical guitar.

After nearly a century, a sound has developed that a new guitar simply cannot imitate. The Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar possesses this dry, mature, yet sweet tone that makes you feel as though every note already carries a story with it.

With a scale length of 658 mm and a nut width of 52 mm, this guitar features classic Spanish dimensions. This gives it a familiar feel and provides ample space for both the left and right hands to perform nuanced classical playing.

However, the fact that a guitar that is nearly 100 years old can still be reliably used as a musical instrument today is by no means a given.

The 1930 Telesforo Julve classical guitar was therefore professionally restored by luthier Matthias Hartig. Hartig has extensive experience with historical guitars and has expertly restored the instrument to a stable and highly playable condition. The restoration is therefore not something to be hidden away—rather, it is the very reason this piece of Spanish guitar history can once again be played and appreciated today.

And that's exactly why the Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar is far too interesting to simply be admired.

It takes us back to Valencia around 1930, to a tradition of guitar making whose workshops and personal connections gave rise to numerous important Spanish guitar makers. At the same time, it is not merely a historical artifact. Its full, warm, and unusually rich tone makes it an instrument that still has something musically unique to express today.

Almost 100 years old.

Professionally restored.

Spruce and beautiful walnut wood.

And a rich, sweet voice with that special maturity that only time can bring.

The Telesforo Julve 1930 Classical Guitar is thus not only a fascinating piece of Valencian guitar-making history—but also a historic guitar that best tells its story when you play it.
