Ok, this was made with my special stash of material. The color is a bit of a green huge and frankly having played and seen many D"angelico Guitars especially from the 50's and 60's this looks like the real deal. I tried a new buffing compound and used my trusty drill press for some of the work. The job has a bit of bittersweet to it as the drill press was Bill Hollenbeck's from his shop. His widow gave it to me for helping her when he died. This press is an old Delta at least 40-50 years old and is heavy duty. It will do things no current press can. I also have a new order of buffing compound is pretty nice. I could had buff a guitar to a mirror finish if it was nice and cured. I like the results.
Then the material and the work reminded me of how Hollenbeck never got in in hurry. If things were not going well quit and try again another day. Well yesterday I was putting the last large layer of binding around and it is really hard in the curved area of the pickguard. I ruined a piece of binding with the hot gun trying to get it to bend more. Finally I found a large socket from the that was exact to the size of the circle at the end. Bing it worked and I was able to heat properly and get the binding on tight.
I am not anxious to part with this guard as I can use it myself I am sure sometime in the future but I can make another exact. So here it is and you have to drill the holes and mount the bracket. This guard as they all are is not completely perfect. On the guitar I believe it one could say it was an original and not many would know. Of course that would be telling a fib so don't do that. I do not believe another is going to be for sale anytime soon. This is a large pickguard for an 18 inch New Yorker it is 7.5 inches long and almost 5 inches wide. It would work on a 17 inch but be oversized. It also would work on any nice 18 inch guitar that needs fine pickguard. Contact me if you need another size can build one to specs.
