Overview: Finally, here's a good name for a 4-string mandolin! Mr. Reece is a high-end builder based in Hawaii and octave mandolins ("octolindos") seem to be his bread and butter at the moment, judging from the ones available on his website. This smaller, four-string cousin bridges the space between a mandolin and a ukulele and, I'm assuming with the correct gauges, could also be restrung to play in uke GCEA tuning. It is, however, currently setup as a GDAE-tuned 4-string mandolin.
It's got a sweet, mellow sound and decent projection, too. The jazzy looks will let it sit-in with just about any ensemble and I know I may have harped on this before -- but if you're a mandolinist and you've never had access to a 4-string, do yourself a favor and try it. It's a fun diversion and the sound is extremely conducive to getting yourself in the mood for chord-melody and workshopping chord progressions -- not to mention fingerpicking!
Per writeups, this Custom Deluxe model is quoted as having Indian rosewood back and sides and an Italian spruce top. I'm not entirely sure if that's accurate, but that is some wild looking rosewood if so! It has maple binding, an ebony bridge, a rosewood board, and rosewood headstock veneer. Build quality is top-notch.
Repairs included: I just gave it a few mild setup adjustments. It's playing spot-on and ready to go.
