THE DESERT ISLAND

One microphone. One short cable. One box.

The GDSM 200 originally belonged to one of the finest stereo microphone systems Sennheiser developed during the 1960s. But underneath the stereo bridge are two completely independent professional microphones — each detachable and entirely capable of working on its own.

one 402 CAPSULE is not to be ignored balanced XLR, deliberately short cable and the smallest practical case around it.

MORE SENNHEISER THAN GRUNDIG

Although carrying the Grundig GDSM 200 designation, the microphone itself comes from the Sennheiser MDS 1 system and reflects the long-standing cooperation between the two German manufacturers.

The complete MDS 1 was an unusually ambitious stereo recording instrument: two detachable dynamic microphones mounted into a precision bridge allowing continuously adjustable spacing and angle.

Remove the bridge, however, and something interesting remains:

a remarkably capable little mono microphone.

402/3 CAPSULE

At its heart is Sennheiser's 402/3 moving-coil capsule, a professional cardioid dynamic design from the 1960s.

Its acoustic construction includes a front resonator and carefully controlled internal acoustic path. This was never simply a basic tape-recorder microphone placed into an elaborate stereo accessory; the quality of the individual microphones is what allowed the complete MDS 1 system to work in the first place.

And sixty years later, the individual microphone remains genuinely useful.

SOUND

This is the reason we built the Desert Island MDS KIT

The GDSM 200 is simply a beautiful-sounding dynamic microphone.

It has the solidity and forgiving behaviour of a moving-coil design, but without feeling crude or severely bandwidth-limited. Its cardioid response makes placement predictable, while the tonal balance works remarkably well as a general-purpose recording microphone.

And stripped away from the elaborate stereo system, that versatility becomes even more obvious.

It is small, passive, uncomplicated and ready for practically any conventional microphone input.

MORE 409 THAN GDSM

Tried avoiding this question but that's impossible.

YES - It does sound like the VINTAGE SENNHEISER MD 409.
