About these microphones

The Authensis AXIS CS came out of a collaboration between MBHO — the small German workshop in Obrigheim that has been building microphones by hand since the 1970s — and Sonus, an acoustics company. It was never a mass-market product, and complete sets rarely come up.

The distinguishing feature is the capsule mount: the capsule sits on an axle that swings through 180 degrees, so you can aim it independently of how the body is clamped. That makes it genuinely useful when the mic position is dictated by a stand, a bar, or a ceiling mount rather than by where you'd ideally like the capsule to point.

The CS capsule is a wide cardioid tuned for speech and ensemble work. Response runs 80 Hz to 20 kHz with no perceived roll-off at the bottom of that range, nominal impedance is 200 ohms, and maximum SPL is 130 dB. It suits choir, ensemble, room and ambience pickup, spoken word, and fixed installation work. It is not intended as a close-mic for kick drums or bass cabinets.

Condition and disclosure

I want to be straightforward about what this set is and isn't.

• All five are in excellent cosmetic condition. Please look through the photos for the exact state of each unit.
• These are not a factory-matched set. They are five units of the same model. I do not have measurement equipment and make no claim about how closely they match.
• These microphones carry no serial numbers. As far as I can establish this was a small limited run and the units were never individually numbered.
• The capsule is permanently fixed and cannot be unscrewed or swapped. If you know MBHO from their interchangeable-capsule bodies, note that this model works differently.
• They have not been recently serviced or calibrated.
• I bought them secondhand in Poland. I am not the original owner and have no history on them beyond that.

Shipped from Poland, well packed in the case. Local pickup is available and welcome — if you're able to collect in person, you can hear all five before paying, which I'd encourage at this price.
