1976 VOX AC30 Top Boost – Handwired – Matching T1088 Silver Alnico – Exceptional ConditionFor sale is my exceptionally well-preserved 1976 VOX AC30 Top Boost, Made in England during the Dallas era, serial number 2785.It is one of the traditional handwired tag-strip versions, with discrete components individually mounted and wired rather than using a modern main PCB.HistoryBefore me, this VOX had only one owner.According to the previous owner, the amplifier spent most of its life protected in a rehearsal room and was used for only approximately 5–6 gigs. Its history is reflected in its remarkable cosmetic condition. For an amplifier approaching 50 years of age, the exterior is exceptionally clean and looks almost like new.Naturally, minor signs of age may be present. Please refer to the photographs for the actual cosmetic condition.Matching T1088 Silver Alnico speakersThe amplifier is fitted with a pair of VOX/Celestion T1088 Silver Alnico speakers, often referred to as “Silver Bulldogs”.Both carry exactly the same markings:T1088 – FJ4The FJ4 date code dates both speakers to 4 June 1976, making them a desirable matching pair manufactured on the same day.Together with serial number 2785, the speaker dates strongly support dating the amplifier to 1976, most likely summer 1976.ConstructionThe output transformer is marked:7959 – AC30 OUTPUTThis transformer is documented in AC30s from the Dallas production period and is consistent with the date and construction of this amplifier. The output stage uses four EL84 valves with silicon rectification.Condition and servicingPrior to sale, the AC30 was professionally inspected by a qualified technician. Any defective or no longer properly functioning valves/tubes were replaced and the amplifier was subsequently tested. It is fully functional and ready to play – and purrs like a kitten.Reversible speaker connectionA small modification has been made to make the speaker connection more practical for modern use.A plug has been fitted to the speaker cable, with a corresponding speaker socket mounted on a small aluminium plate inside the amplifier. No additional hole was drilled into the original cabinet or chassis. The plate is secured with a single screw and the modification can easily be reversed. This makes it possible to disconnect the internal speakers and use equipment such as a Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box, attenuator/power soak or suitable external speaker cabinet.SoundFour EL84s, the Top Boost circuit and the vintage T1088 Silver Alnico speakers deliver the open, harmonically rich character associated with a classic AC30.At cleaner settings the amplifier is highly responsive and dynamic. As the volume increases, compression, harmonics and the characteristic British AC30 crunch emerge. It is particularly rewarding with single-coil guitars such as a Telecaster or Stratocaster – clear and immediate with a lighter touch, becoming increasingly harmonically rich and aggressive as the amplifier is pushed.SpecificationsVOX AC30 Top BoostMade in England1976 – most likely summer 1976Serial No. 2785Dallas eraHandwired tag-strip construction4 × EL84 output stageSilicon rectification7959 AC30 Output Transformer2 × VOX/Celestion T1088 Silver Alnico speakersSpeaker date codes: FJ4 – 4 June 1976OriginalityI deliberately do not advertise an almost 50-year-old valve amplifier as “100% untouched original.”Normal maintenance should be expected on an amplifier of this age. The recently replaced valves/tubes and the reversible speaker connection modification are disclosed above.Based on the components and construction currently visible, the amplifier presents as a coherent example of a 1976 Dallas-era VOX AC30.ConclusionA genuine vintage English AC30 in an unusually well-preserved condition. Not a reissue. Not a modern reproduction. Almost 50 years old – and it simply doesn't look its age.
