Gretsch Model 6120 Chet Atkins Hollow Body Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1956), made in Brooklyn, NY, serial # 18530, Western Orange lacquer finish, laminated maple body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original blond tolex hard shell case. The 1950s Gretsch Chet Atkins hollowbody model 6120 is one of the most iconic of the decade's American guitars, identifiable to even most casual guitar fans. Over the course of less than five years, the model's features transitioned from the full-out western kitsch appeal of the first 1955 edition to the sleeker '60s stylings while always retaining the distinctive "Western Orange" body finish. This particular guitar is an early transitional model made at the very end of 1955 for the '56 model year. While the iconic "G" branded into the top is the most immediately eye-catching, this 6120 has features that are specific to 1955-6 models. The only oddity is the Bigsby; the unit fitted to this guitar is a 1957 style swing-arm piece but appears to have been in place for many decades. The Bigsby initially fitted to the 6120 was a fixed-arm model, which players often found inconvenient as it got in the way of many picking styles. This 185xx series guitar would be expected to have that original fixed arm unit, but our best guess is the original owner quickly replaced it with the new swivel-arm Bigsby when it was available in later 1956 or 1957. As with everything Gretsch absolutes are elusive, but in any case this piece of hardware is period correct and has been on this guitar a LONG time! The other features are typical of early 1956 including the semi-transparent orange finish on the laminated maple body and neck, dual DeArmond Dynasonic pickups, old-style "arrow" (non-G-logo) knobs, the distinctive pearloid fingerboard inlay engraved with western motifs and a matching Steer's head inlay in the headstock with the then-new larger truss rod cover. The tuners are the typical openback Waverly machines, with all hardware except the Bigsby pieces gold plated. The bridge is an aluminum Bigsby saddle on a wooden base, a Gretsch-specific fitting. The 185xx serial number batch is considered to be the final set of Gretsch guitars manufactured in 1955 for 1956 sale. This classic model was already in transition; by the middle of the year the original "yee haw" features were starting to disappear, mostly at the behest of Chet Atkins himself. We are always thrilled to feature a "Full-western" 6120 Chet Atkins hollow body in our showroom, and find this is a truly superb example. With vibe to spare it is one of the coolest Gretsch guitars we have had in a while, back again its original home of Brooklyn!Overall length is 41 1/2 in. (105.4 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 3/4 in. (7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This is a truly superb original example of this classic model simply looking not much played and extremely well cared for just over 70 years. The original see-through orange lacquer is very clean overall with only light scuffing and small wear marks; even the back has no notable buckle wear; nobody played this one wearing a cowboy outfit! The back of the neck is very clean as well, the only real blemish is a small knot mark in the wood under the original finish. There is no binding distress at all, just a tiny shrinkage gap on the back center edge. The neck has been very neatly reset, with no notable scarring and some minimal touchup around the heel. Except for what we believe to be the just-ever-so-slightly later Bigsby unit the hardware remains all original and complete; some of the gold plating is worn to a muted sheen and is mostly rubbed away on the tuner buttons and knobs. The Lucite pickguard has no cracks and the celluloid spacer rings under the DeArmond pickups are still intact. The original frets, metal nut and fingerboard show hardly any wear. The western-motif decorated celluloid fingerboard inlays are in excellent shape, the whimsical engravings not worn away at all. Aside from its killer looks this is simply a great guitar to play, with the classic sound that powered Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy, and of course Chet Atkins. It is complete in the very clean original Gretsch western trimmed "Cowboy" case with the original decorated tooled leather Cowboy strap and the Gretsch-branded polishing cloth. For any Gretsch collector of fan this guitar is simply a stunner, one of the finest we have seen a timelessly cool package of twang and kitsch. If you have been looking for one of these, they really don't come much better! Excellent Condition.
