Very nice original Jazzmaster from mid-1962 with a slab board neck, original sunburst finish, all original parts and OHSC. This Jazzmaster has been in a long-term collection until recently (and came from the original owner via a dealer 30+ years ago). I have several nice pre-CBS Jazzmasters and this ’62 is one of the best playing examples I’ve had. Typical of mid-62 JMs, this one has a very nice full neck profile while still retaining the early style slab Brazilian Rosewood fretboard. Plays beautifully and sounds great. Comes in original brown case in excellent condition and bridge cover which may or may not be original. (Note: the strap shown in the photos is likely made later). Condition Notes: Overall, this Jazzmaster presents very nicely and is in great condition. All parts are original to the guitar (new foam risers have been added under the pickups as the originals have dried up, and the original neck shim is included). The original sunburst finish on this guitar is mostly intact. The only reason this guitar isn’t listed for the typical price of a ’60-62 Jazzmaster ($15-16k) is because the side edges of the guitar were touched up decades ago with lacquer (color + clear). It’s believed that this guitar was sold new with a Fender “Parker Body-Guard” accessory that protected the back from buckle rash. While it did a fine job at that, these body guard accessories unfortunately had a foam liner at the edges which would chemically interact with the finish. The result today is that you will see guitars with a perfectly intact front and back (no buckle rash!) but marred finish on the sides. Somebody expertly touched up just the edges of the body, perfectly color matched to the original finish. It’s so well done that it’s indistinguishable next to an intact original guitar. The sunburst you see is still the original factory paintwork, front and back, sunken into the grain and checked as it should be. The only modification is the finish touch-up work on the edges, which is only visible under blacklight. See photos. The neck is 100% intact and original finish, with a nicely worn-in feel. The frets are original and in good shape, some minor wear on the first few frets but they have plenty of mileage remaining. There are various worn areas on the body finish, including the usual lower bout marks common in offsets, due to rubbing in the case. There is a tiny grain mark (knot?) on the front and some mineral spots on the back. Considering the major price difference between this and a perfectly intact sunburst ’62 JM — this one is priced to sell. Please keep that in mind if submitting any offers.
