The soon-to-be classic Beta bass overdrive just got a few awesome upgrades, coming in the form of the SolidGoldFX Custom Shop Beta Germanium, a bass overdrive with more vintage flavoring.
This special version of the Beta features a JFET preamp along with four NOS Soviet germanium diodes, which serve up a compressed old-school tone that gives you a creamier clipping and colorful, tight saturation.
Not only is the Custom Shop Beta offering a more retro sound, but it has a unique, articulate high end. With the tweaked treble frequency response, as well as circuitry recalibrated for flatter mids and a more compact low end, this Beta has the kind of innate sound that makes your bass sound stand out.
Three typical knobs are included on the Beta: gain, tone control and volume. With just this trio of knobs, it’s pretty impressive the dynamic differences in tone you can wring out of the Beta.
If you turn down the gain and bump up the tone, you make your playing more present, or if you crank up the gain and volume, you’ll hear a nearly synth-like square wave buzz. And the tone changes significantly depending on whether you’re using a pick or your fingers.
