E-mu systems Emulator II:

Step back into the golden era of synthesis that defined the unmistakable sound of the 1980s.

Description

***We’ve received a rather rare item. It’s been decades since I last played one of these myself. Back then, mastering this synth was one of my goals as a musician. In any case, there’s no doubt it was part of the global music scene at the time. Although this synth shows some signs of wear, I believe it can still hold its own with a bit of ingenuity. It’s up to you to unlock this treasure trove of 1980s sounds. Thank you.

There are very few instruments in the history of electronic music that command the same level of reverence as the E-MU Emulator II. Released in 1984, this monumental sampler and workstation became the immediate backbone of the 1980s soundscape, shaping the sonic identities of countless legendary artists and producers. To own an Emulator II is to possess a tangible piece of musical history, an instrument that revolutionized how musicians interacted with sampled audio and brought an entirely new dimension of creativity to the professional studio.

The true magic of the Emulator II lies in its unmistakable sonic signature—a beautiful, highly sought-after collision of early digital grit and pure analog warmth. Operating at an 8-bit resolution with a 27.7 kHz sample rate, it captures audio with a charming, lo-fi texture that modern high-definition software simply cannot replicate. However, the secret weapon of this machine is its glorious 24dB/octave resonant analog low-pass filter. When those crunchy, companded digital samples are driven through these lush analog filters, the resulting sound is incredibly thick, punchy, and saturated with organic musicality. The soundstage it creates is remarkably vast, offering a unique headroom and a haunting transparency that breathes unparalleled life into every choir, string, and drum hit.

Visually and physically, the Emulator II is a masterpiece of vintage industrial design. It boasts a commanding presence in any studio, characterized by its robust chassis, intuitive layout of tactile buttons, and classic floppy disk drives. Weighing in at a substantial 25 kg (55 lbs), its heavy-duty build quality reflects the era's commitment to creating uncompromising professional gear. The 61-key synth-action keybed provides a responsive and deeply engaging playing experience. For the dedicated audiophile, vintage synth collector, or modern producer seeking authentic vintage character, the E-MU Emulator II remains an unmatched, deeply inspiring musical centerpiece.
