A very rare find...
Here is a mediun bore, hand assembled, Martin Handcraft trumpet likely from the Dansant era. These trumpets were favored by both Miles Davis and Chet Baker. Famed for their warm, mellow timbre they are well suited to jazz or orchestral music. It's original with the case and two Elkhart mouthpces (size 8 & 9). It has all the original attachments including the original silver cloth. It is a medium bore. The serial number dates to 1926-1936. This is a very special instrument and in exceptional condition. There is some tarnish but a quick buff with the silver rag brought the shine right back to new (see pics for comparison). For fear of doing damage to such a rare instrument we have not cleaned it entirely. The valves move freely as do the spit valves. This trumpet had been considered and authenticated by specialists on dedicated forums. We suggest that a professional clean and check it before regular use as it has sat unplayed in it's case for decades. There are no obvious scratches, dents or crimps visible. It is in remarkable condition.
From the forums:
1. Far earlier than the 50's/60's. 71xxx serial places it at 1926, which is right for this style "Handcraft" engraving. This looks like it could be one of the reallv early Dansant models, perhaps the Symphony Dansant. Given it's all silver with no nickel or brass, it's doubtful to be a New Master. It's a Bb/A trumpet, using the rotor on the main tuning slide to switch. Looks like it also has Bb/C slides, but it's possible that the different slide sets are both Bb/A but low pitch and high pitch.
2. Looks like a Martin Handcraft Svmphony Bb/C with Bb/A tuning slide as well. I assume the second set of slides is for a C configuration or Bb configuration, hard to tell from pictures. Here's a link to the Bb/A version with a set of C slides Vintage Martin Handcraft Trumpet /vintage-martin-handcraft-trumpet/?v= 7885444af42e The principal trumpet in one of my orchestras plays a horn similar to this (Bb C) quite often as his main horn. His has been modified for left hand use. To be honest. the condition of this horn and the vast amount of combinations here makes it a verv versatile horn if it's an M or L bore horn. Take good care of it cause this is a museum piece from the looks of it! It might not be up to snuff for a top world 10 orchestra but it's a highly sought after, professional level instrument. If it plays well, it's great to have so you don't need a Bb and a C trumpet. As a jazz horn, it's perfect if it's in decent shape.
