🎛️ Technical Details
According to the expert report, all components and historical details were carefully assessed:
- The head, manufactured in late 1965, still features the rare and highly sought-after Gold Block Logo, used briefly before Marshall transitioned to the Script logo in 1966.
- By late ’65, other transitional features were already being introduced, such as the switch from the Pilot Light Amber dome to the Red Square, and from Silver Disk knobs to the Classic style.
- The cabinet, made between 1967 and 1968, is loaded with Celestion Greenback Pre-Rola G12H T1281 speakers, all date-stamped February 1968 and equipped with Pulsonic cones. These speakers carry the rare Front Gasket serial numbers, only produced from mid-1967 to March 1968 — regarded as the "Holy Grail" of Greenbacks.
When both were purchased in 1968, the Cabinet didn’t have any logo. A request was made to Marshall for a NOS 64/65 Gold Block logo to match the original head.
One speaker was replaced with an identical model from 1971, but the overall condition of the cabinet is impeccable, having spent most of its life stored and protected.
Marshall has records of at least 24 different JTM45 variations produced between 1962 and 1968. That number could actually be much higher, depending on the custom orders made during that time. The serial number records Marshall has don’t necessarily follow the exact manufacturing order.
This particular amp dates approximately from between October and December of 1965. It still has the block logo but already features the red square pilot light and the classic knobs typical of 1966. The cabinet, on the other hand, dates from 1967 and has Pre-Rola Celestion Greenbacks dated February 3rd, 1968.
🎶 Historical & Collectible Value
This Marshall Head & Cabinet was purchased in 1968 in UK by a Brazilian who was an Italian consular agent, he loved music, his son born in 69, in the later 80s would become one of the greatest names of world rock, later it was sold to another guitarist, and a long story was traced. This amp has since played an active role in the musical landscape of renowned Brazilian artists, being used extensively in studio recordings and productions until 2014.
Over the decades, the head underwent only minimal basic servicing, preserving nearly 100% of its original components.
This is the Lead model head, identical to the JTM-45 used by Mark Knopfler for many years, including on the iconic Brothers in Arms album — specifically on the tracks “Money for Nothing” and “Brothers in Arms”.
According to Marshall’s records, this amplifier was manufactured just 97 units apart from Mark Knopfler’s JTM45. They’re like twin brothers separated at birth, however, this one left the factory earlier, featuring the Gold Block logo, while Knopfler’s amp came with no logo and is dated 1966.
For reference: Mark Knopfler’s original JTM-45 head is currently listed for sale at $79,000.
