the famous AEG / Telefunken tube KL-25 tape recorder!
A three head, a single motor machine capable of taking 7″ reels and available with an operating speed of either 3¾ or 7½ ips. This recorder was released both by AEG as the KL-25 and by Telefunken as the Magnetophon KL-25. Other features included a resettable tape indicator, one-piece capstan assembly, and inputs for microphone, tuner, phono, or another recorder.
In the United States, the Telefunken KL-25 was imported by American Elite of 1775 Broadway, N.Y., N.Y. and sold for – quite a lot for a non-professional a machine such as this. It always amuses me that during the mid-fifties, many manufacturers (especially the European ones) designed their recorders to look like women’s beauty-cases and this one is no exception. It would have looked very chic in the first-class cabin of some well-to-do Transatlantic ocean traveler!
