The tone is overall robust deep rich and complex suitable for soloists; chamber musicians, orchestral/symphony players, folk, mariachi performers anyone looking for a well projecting instrument or looking for a clean sound to record with. Indicative of the Markneukirchen school of the time pre-war attributed to the Ernst Heinrich Roth workshop no other claims of authenticity other than label and brands, this appears to be an XIR highest model the firm offered at the time as it has an affixed signature atop the initial label the firm did not assign serial numbers until post 1924/25 in some cases. The overall construction does indicate the age, tone and construction to be appropriate for the attribution.
The top is a fine two piece slab of quarter cut maple with very fine figure and evenly bookmatched and well seasoned.
The back is a lovely quarter cut slab of two piece maple with beautiful high figure, sides neck and scroll are of similar timbers the scroll is exceptionally beautiful.
F holes are exceptionally done and nicely fluted. The corners are well done as is the purfling.
Ebony fingerboard and original fittings; pegs, tailpiece and chin rest.
Over an AUBERT bridge stamped as well on the feet GERMANY and numbered.
The strings are a new Larson Il Cannone Soloist Warm & Broad A and a new black titanium Hill style 'E' fine tuner.
The varnish is a lovely deep reddish golden brown atop an undercoat of yellow golden amber huge with some antiquing and some ware from time of over a century of being played. Slight scratches atop the surface from patina over the years no major re touching done as the original varnish is still mostly in tact.
