For sale is an original Empirical Labs EL7 FATSO Jr, the highly regarded stereo analog processor from Empirical Labs.
This is the original EL7 FATSO Jr — not the later EL7X revision. The original EL7 was discontinued in 2013 and replaced by the EL7X, making these increasingly difficult to find in original form.
The FATSO Jr combines several forms of analog processing in one stereo unit, including:
- Harmonic generation and soft clipping
- High-frequency saturation
- Transformer/tape-head style coloration
- Classic FATSO compression
- Digitally controlled analog signal path
- Stereo processing on both channels
- External-link capability for linking FATSO units
It is particularly useful for adding analog character, density, warmth and controlled saturation to drums, bass, vocals, guitars, keyboards, mix buses and digital recordings. It can be used subtly for cohesion and tone or pushed harder for obvious saturation and compression.
Original EL7 Features
The original FATSO Jr is known for its distinctive combination of saturation, transformer coloration and fixed-style compression curves. Empirical Labs describes the FATSO as designed to reproduce musical nonlinearities associated with tube, Class-A discrete and magnetic-tape equipment.
