Vintage large-diaphragm condenser microphone: RFT / VEB Mikrofontechnik Gefell UM 70 capsule head on the MV 692 amplifier body. Made in the former GDR. Tested and fully functional.

The set

UM 70 capsule — gold-sputtered large diaphragm, pattern selector on the head: omni / cardioid / figure-8

MV 692 body — FET circuit with output transformer, switchable ‑10 dB pad and low-cut filter

Markings: Nr 3762, s/n 12149

Why this microphone

The Gefell factory produced under the Neumann name until 1972, and the UM 70 capsule descends directly from the M7 design — the same one found in the legendary Neumann U 47. The MV 692 is the version with an output transformer, unlike the later transformerless UMT 70 S, which is where its density and weight come from.

Warm, full midrange, smooth top end without harshness, and a pronounced proximity effect. Excellent on vocals, acoustic guitar, strings, woodwind and brass, upright bass, guitar cabinets and drum overheads. Often compared to the U 87 / U 89, but with more forward mids.

The MV 692 body is modular and also accepts other Gefell capsules (M 70, M 71, M 93, M 94, M 73), so it works as the foundation of a whole microphone system.

Specifications

Large-diaphragm condenser, FET circuit with output transformer

Patterns: omni / cardioid / figure-8, switchable on the head

Frequency range approx. 30 Hz – 18 kHz

‑10 dB pad and low-cut filter switchable on the body

48 V phantom power, XLR connector

Power and connector

Standard XLR with 48 V phantom — plug it into any interface or preamp with a normal mic cable, no external PSU needed. To be transparent: RFT-era units originally shipped with a 7-pin connector requiring an N 691 power supply, so this one was converted to XLR / 48 V at some point in its life. This is by far the most common and most usable configuration for these microphones.

Condition

Very good for its age. Wear to the black body finish — scratches and small paint chips, all visible in the photos; the rings show natural patina. Grille is free of dents, mesh undamaged. All three polar patterns work correctly, pad and low-cut switches function properly.

Ships from Poland, fully insured and double-boxed. Local pickup available in Warsaw. Happy to answer questions or send additional photos.
