With Treasured Vintage instruments there is always a good story so here goes.......STORY…………To the best of my belief…. the provenance facts for this ‘72 Gibson, serial number 125885 are as follows.....Back in 1985 I used to hang out in a Guitar shop ….Rocky Road Music in Corby ….where both the owner, Roly Wolstenholme, and I, had a taste for vintage Gibsons. He had a 330 in reasonable condition and a couple of 335s butI wanted to collect something special, late ‘60s or close, and in red, so I joked with him and said.......“One day a Guy is going to walk through your door with a really nice original red 345 Stereo that has been under his bed for years and when that happens.....I want to be the first to lknow”Some months later I popped in at random, just to have a play…. and the staff of the shop were gathered around this guitar, checking the date and testing the electrics. (And drooling with ecstasy!!) “I was just about to call you”, said my friend. “This guitar has your name on it! It came in this afternoon.”It became and remained the star of my collection.I can only trust the story that came with it …..but apparently the man who brought it in said he bought it from the London main Gibson importers, Rose Morris, I believe, and at the time, in 1972.....he wanted a 345 Stereo and nothing else would do, but the dealer only had 335s in stock so the shop’s in-house luthier offered to customise it to 345 Stereo with a full set of original electrics from stock, bringing it up to full 345 S specification. This was done… and to further customise from a standard 335 an extra abalone insert was added at fret one position like some of the custom 355sThe label was then annotated by the dealer and signed RM which I assume was Rose Morris OK....so that’s how I believe it originated and became a genuine 345 ES supplied as such by the importer from new stock….. It is not a later conversion, it started its life as a 345 ES spec guitar.CONDITIONOne small area on the back has had a mark removed and dressed.Very skilfully repaired, very light, presumably some-time buckle mark on the back but the spot localised refinishing work is excellent. See photographs. And there is a small scuff on the underside edge of the lower bout…a mark presumably from a stand (not by me!) it is minor.Otherwise it is an absolute beauty, and in amazing condition for 50+ years old.The front is immaculate, fretboard shows very little wear and any fret wear itself is minimal.Back of the neck is near perfect For 37 years since I bought it, it has been displayed either on my collection wall or in its case, and only played lightly occasionally whenever I wanted to get that Gibson feel. Hence the excellent condition.I have plenty of other guitars that I use on a regular basis.Never Gigged …and never left my smoke-free house. It has never needed a case as it has never left the house…so I have purchased a new Gibson style pink lined case from Gator and added the Gibson logo. It fits perfectly and looks great. It currently has a roller bridge which I prefer but the original bridge comes with it.Otherwise there have been no modifications to this guitar. It is totally original. Also there is quality custom made lead with an angled guitar jack that neatly splits the Stereo output or links back to mono with a separate connector. The Varitone and Volume/Tone controls all work perfectly as they should.I am selling because, at the age of 87 I would like some of my collection to move on.Guitars of this period…. and in sometimes well-used condition….. have been advertised at silly prices above £12k… but a sensible offer around £6,000 is realistic for a ‘72 classic in this fantastic condition.Note on serial numbers.Gibson ran numbers from 100,000 in 1970 increasing approximately 20,000 each year through to 1975AI Overview……..“Yes, serial number 125885 fits squarely into the early 1970s production window for a Gibson ES 345 pointing directly to a possible 1972 issue (or roughly 1971–1972)”
