Lap steel guitars opened up a completely different way of approaching the instrument, with their horizontal playing style and use of a slide creating a smooth, vocal like quality. By the 1950s, Gibson had firmly established its place in this space, producing a range of lap steels that combined strong build quality with simple, effective electronics.

This Gibson Century 6 is believed to date to the early to mid 1950s and is finished in its distinctive salmon colour. It carries a great visual presence, and overall has that lived in feel that suits the instrument well.

The control layout, featuring three knobs, points toward a later 50s configuration, paired with a single P90 pickup. The electronics cavity appears to be original, supporting the overall consistency of the instrument. The P90 delivers a clear, direct response with plenty of character, well suited to the natural sustain and phrasing of lap steel playing.

In use, it has that immediate, singing quality you want from a lap steel, with a strong attack and smooth sustain that holds together nicely across different tunings and styles.

It comes supplied with what appears to be its original hard shell case, completing a very honest example from this period.
