We shouldn’t live only on Marshall and Fender. Ampeg amplifiers are a crucial part of music history, having been used by various jazz musicians (the focus of Ampeg in its early days), but soon discovered by rock musicians. Keith Richards used an SVT in the recordings of Exile on Main St, Sticky Fingers, and many other Rolling Stones albums. Interestingly, this amplifier was developed for use with the bass guitar, but its rich low-end and fuzzy texture at high gain also captivated Stoner Rock guitarists, becoming one of the most important tools in the sound of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age.
The Drive for the Dead features a JFET emulation of the circuit of these amplifiers, with a switch offering two voicings and distinct gain levels: the Deaf mode explores the low gain aspect, perfect for playing 60s and 70s rock and roll and blues, with a rich texture that pairs well when pushed by boosters, overdrives, and fuzzes – making it an excellent preamp/overdrive for bass use (as its bass control allows the low-end of the instrument to be intact). The Dead mode comes with a hefty dose of gain, perfect for performing the Songs for the Deaf phase of QOTSA. But don’t be fooled, its fuzzy sound and equalization controls make the Drive for the Dead a versatile tool that can be used across various music genres. By powering the pedal with 18v, the headroom is expanded, compression decreases, and its response to the guitar's volume control and picking becomes even more expressive.
