Martin 1979 D-35, a classic 1970s instrument of the folk-song era.
[Staff comment: Inoue]
The D-35 was introduced in 1965 with a 3-piece back, developed after Brazilian rosewood export restrictions made large 2-piece dreadnought backs hard to source. Its innovative design and unique sound were loved by many great players, from Rory Gallagher overseas to Takuro Yoshida, Kenji Endo, Chuei Yoshikawa, and Iruka in Japan.
This 1979 example comes from the golden age of Japanese folk music. Nearly half a century of aging has given the body a rich amber tone, and weather checking throughout adds genuine vintage character. Fitted with German Schaller tuners typical of the era; the nut and saddle are original Micarta. The pickguard and bridge pins have been replaced, but most major parts remain original. Comes with the coveted Martin blue case.
Compared to the D-28, the D-35 is often described as having a more restrained low end and a tighter overall sound, and this guitar shows that character clearly. Its highlights are a well-defined note outline and excellent chord separation: fingerpicked lightly, it gives the glossy, beautiful tone only a Martin can; strummed hard for vocal accompaniment, it stays powerful without getting muddy or uneven. A superb sound for backing a singer while keeping its own presence.
