Lumpy’s Tone Shop Liquid Lead

Is a highly regarded "Marshall-in-a-box" (MIAB) overdrive pedal meticulously designed by builder Tommy Castellucci to capture Jimmy Page’s iconic live Led Zeppelin tones from the 1972–1977 era.

Unlike generalized Plexi pedals, the Liquid Lead specifically emulates the high treble channel of a late-1960s Marshall Super Lead amp.

Key Features & Sonic Characteristics

  • JFET Circuit Architecture: The pedal uses JFET gain stages to behave exactly like an actual tube preamp. It provides smooth, gradual breakup ranging from a light grit to a classic rock crunch.
  • Amp-Like Dynamics: It is exceptionally responsive to playing dynamics. Digging in increases the saturation, while rolling off your guitar’s volume knob yields sparkling, clean tones.
  • Voicing: The input stage features an upper-midrange and treble boost that tightens the low end and adds a vocal-like clarity to the mids without turning harsh. It is widely celebrated for capturing the "No Quarter," "Whole Lotta Love," and "The Lemon Song" live vibe.
  • Voltage Flexibility: It can be run at standard 9V for a softer, spongier compression, or up to 18V to significantly increase headroom, presence, and overall dynamic response.
